The magazine is produced by the Defense Media Activity group for the Secretary of the Air Force Office of Public Affairs.

The inception of Airman Magazine can be traced back to August 1957, when it was first published under the title The Airman. Prior to this, the magazine's direct predecessor was the Air Service Weekly Newsletter, which began publication on September 21, 1918. The last printed edition of Airman Magazine was released on September 1, 2011, and the magazine transitioned to a digital format, with the September/October 2011 edition being the first to be published online.

The digital format of Airman Magazine has been designed specifically for Apple and Android tablet users, offering in-depth feature stories and high-quality photos that readers have come to expect from the publication. This format also introduces layers of multimedia content and interactivity only available through new publishing techniques. A limited interactive version of the magazine is also viewable in web browser format. For more stories, readers are directed to Airman Online, the website for the official magazine of the U.S. Air Force.

Airman Magazine also publishes The Book annually, which is a summary of basic Air Force facts, including summaries of weapons and aircraft. An archive of past issues is available in .pdf format, providing a valuable resource for those interested in the history and operations of the U.S. Air Force.{{Categories}}
